New Islamic Art Galleries

Renovated galleries dedicated to art of the "Arab lands, Turkey, Iran, Central Asia and South Asia" open tomorrow at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.
The museum already had a well-known collection of  Islamic art that it says "is one of the finest and most comprehensive" in the world. I saw a dignitary from Turkey being swept through the Met in September, when the Iznik tile gifts were already on display. Happy I was able to visit that city earlier this month, once called Nicea, where I saw two examples of a shocking lack of preservation. It's amazing that there is no big modern Iznik tile museum there. Brings home how valuable a tool museums are for education, and minding precious material.
Here's New York Social Diary's coverage of the gallery preview, with a few familiar faces and some glimpses of the beauty to behold. The Museum Website has video and more about the new spaces, which include impressive tile work and a Moroccan Court and a Damascus Room.
